CURRENTLY READING
Friday, February 08, 2013I've set myself the task of reading 100 books this year. It's February and I'm on 10 1/2. Actually, I'm half way through three separate books, so technically that makes it 11 1/2 if you put all the halves together. Right? I'm going to say yeah.
Anyway, at this precise moment in time, I'm reading Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout. I was trawling through Good Reads, as I do most days, on the look out for a new book and this was rated very highly. As in 4.41 out of 5 highly.
I don't really get why.

Okay, I'm only half way through but so far, I'm not impressed. It's okay. But that's it. The writing is fine. It's nothing spectacular, but it's not hideous, which is a definite plus against some books I have read recently.
The plot is different, I suppose. I mean, it's typical YA. It is. Except instead of vampires or werewolves, which is so damn popular (and I have no idea why, it's just getting annoying so please stop it), we have aliens. That's, you know, new. Yay. But the basic premise is seeming same old. Brooding, jerk of a guy who is totally gorgeous and swoon worthy even though he's a dick but he's also actually kind of sweet and heroic, but then he goes and is a dick all over again and then he's not... but he's fit, so who cares.
I don't like the dialogue. I find it a little stiff. A little unnatural.
But the aspect that annoys me the most is the dot, dot, dot-iness of it! The characters are constantly pausing in their speech. Literally... all... the... time... and in places that I don't think even makes sense. I'll be reading... and then the... character pauses... and... then carries on the... sentence. And I'm like, that's not even a natural place to pause. And it happens so much! Too much! I can't... I don't... oh man, now I'm doing it.
I'm going to keep reading. And my opinion could of course change. I hope it does. I want to like this as much as everyone else who is raving about it. So many four and five star ratings. So many. I want to feel the same way.
I've just finished the 'Archers of Avalon' series by Chelsea Fine. Now those I did enjoy. I really enjoyed the writing style. I loved the characters and the dialogue was some of the best I've encountered. It was humorous, it was natural, it was relatable. I will write a review when I have time. Because I enjoyed them that much. Yeah.
